If you spend longer than a few days in New Zealand you are bound to want to travel between islands. If this is the case you are more than likely going to require a ticket for the Interisland Line, the main company offering ferry services between Wellington in the North Island, and Picton in the South Island.
The Interisland Line is not only a means of transport between the islands but also offers a scenic cruise taking in Wellington Harbour, Cook Strait and the beautiful Marlborough Sounds.
The journey between the two islands can be taken aboard the Interislander ferries, this is a journey of 3 hours. All ferries carry passengers and vehicles. If you are hiring a rental car you may find the company will allow you to leave one car in one island and collect a second car on the other side. This saves a considerable amount on cost as the vehicle fare can be expensive.
