4 Day Shopping Spree in Auckland
Time can be of the essence' when hitting the shops; so with that in mind this Guide to exploring the best of Auckland's shops should make your experience more fruitful.
Usual shopping hours are: Monday to Friday 9.00am - 5.30pm (Check for late nights) Saturday and Sunday 10.00am - 4.00pm (Most areas)
Auckland's fashion designers regularly make waves in Australia and Europe and their boutiques can be found around the best shopping areas of the city.
Upon your arrival in Auckland, collect your rental vehicle and make your way into the city (approx. 1 hours drive from Auckland Airport) to check in to your inner city accommodation.
Day one Newmarket and Parnell Village Broadway is one of Auckland's glamour retail strips. Anything and everything can be found in the wide variety of upmarket stores that line this main street of Newmarket (and some just around the corners). For those looking for the best of international labels a visit to Saks at number 254 is essential - they sell Duty Free for those overseas travellers. At No. 277 Broadway you will find Two Double Seven', a thriving retail mall, which welcomes you with quality, friendly shopping. This is a stylish place to shop where you will find a diverse range of stores. You will find parking underneath the mall that is discounted with proof of sale from any store within the Mall. From Newmarket head down Broadway to Parnell Road, this is approximately a 5 minutes drive. On the way you must stop at Trelise Cooper, 536 Parnell Road. Parnell Village is one of the most captivating areas in town with it's restored colonial villas housing decorator boutiques, antique shops, arts and crafts galleries and numerous restaurants and cafes. Be careful not to miss the first few shops on the left as you enter Parnell Village, and also Jane Daniels Designer Store located at No. 2 Birdwood Crescent (the first street on the left as you enter Parnell Village from Newmarket). When you tire of all the shopping, sit back and watch all the activity from one of the sidebars or cafes. Accommodation has been reserved in the inner city for the duration of your shopping spree.
Day two Inner City Today head for the area known as Chancery with it's unique blend of specialty shops and be sure not to miss the Versace shop just around the corner. (There is a car parking building on the corner of Kitchener and Victoria Streets, with the entrance on Kitchener Street.) From here stroll across to High Street, O'Connell Street and Vulcan Lane - the home of many New Zealand designers. Vulcan Lane will lead you into Queen Street, Auckland's main city shopping thoroughfare with numerous arcades. Approximately half way up Queen Street you will find Smith and Caughey - Auckland's leading Department Store that is an absolute delight to explore. Handy Hint: Buy a bottle of Peppermint Foot spray from the Body Shop, your feet will be very pleased for this at the end of the day.
Day three Your choice of: Botany Town Centre, Westfield Mall St Lukes or Dressmart Factory Outlet Centre. Botany Town Centre is Auckland's newest, largest and most unique shopping complex, having been awarded Auckland's best shopping centre by Metro Magazine. Botany Town Centre has a unique style layout combining the choice and variety of a large mall, with all the excitement and buzz of a town. This centre caters for every taste in fashion, leisure and family shopping and has a variety of places to dine. Located on Te Iriangi Drive, Botany Downs - approximately 25 minutes drive from Auckland city. Westfield, St. Lukes Shopping Mall is New Zealand's largest shopping mall and includes over 150 fashion, food and lifestyle stores and some of New Zealand and Australia's most well respected fashion brands including Colorado, Amazon, Esprit, Rodd & Gunn, Line 7, Cue Design and Scarpa to name a few. St Lukes's aim is to provide an environment that caters for the upmarket fashion brands. Located at 80 St Lukes Road, Mt. Albert - approximately 15 minutes drive from Auckland city. Dressmart Outlet Shopping Centre (Dress-Smart) Onehunga. Here you will find over 70 outlet stores and enjoy savings from 30% off normal retail prices, on popular brand names in fashion, sportswear, accessories, homewares, music and books. Names like Nike, Esprit, Country Road, Canterbury, Levis, Keith Matheson, Barkers, Oroton, Rodd & Gunn, Hartleys, Pumpkin Patch, Living & Giving, Andrea Biani, Walker & Hall to name just a few. Open 7 days 10.00am - 5.00pm and located at 151 Arthur Street, Onehunga between the Airport and Auckland City, approximately 20 minutes drive from the city. What a tough decision!
Day four A day of leisure with a little pampering Prior to heading home it is always a great idea to have a relaxing day with a little pampering for oneself. My suggestion would be to have brunch at the Viaduct Basin. This vibrant waterfront precinct was developed to provide a focus for Americas Cup Yacht Race. This is also a great place for nighttime entertainment. After brunch (and maybe a little glass of bubbles) take a 10-minute Ferry trip from Downtown Auckland across to Devonport and enjoy a stroll around this historic seaside village with its art shops, craft shops and cafes. At the Hyatt Regency Hotel check out the treatments at their Spa at the Hyatt'. Cnr Princess Street and Waterloo Quadrant. Bookings are essential. Ph 355-1242 or 355-1243
